Last month we met a small business owner, let’s call him “Jon,” who was confident he had nothing worth hacking.
“Why would anyone care about my accounts?” he asked.
Then one reused password later, his email was hijacked…which led to his invoicing system…which led to customers receiving fake payment requests.

The 3 Rules of Strong Passwords
Think of your passwords like locks on your doors. The stronger and more unique they are, the harder they are to break.
- Long: Aim for 8-16+ characters. Remember length is power
- Unique: Every account needs its own password
- Random: Skip names, dates, and patterns, random wins every time
If your password looks like 123456 or password, attackers will try it first, because they know people still use them.
Use a Password Manager (Your Digital Vault)
Trying to remember dozens of strong passwords isn’t realistic, and it doesn’t need to be.
A password manager simplifies everything:
- Generates strong, unique passwords
- Stores them securely
- Autofills logins across devices
- Supports passkeys and multifactor authentication (MFA)
You only need to remember one strong passphrase. The rest is handled safely behind the scenes, not recorded on a note stored under a keyboard.
Add MFA for Extra Protection
Multifactor authentication (MFA) is like adding a deadbolt to your digital door. Even if someone gets your password, they’ll hit a second barrier like a code, app approval, or biometric check that helps keep them out.
Focus on enabling MFA for:
- Banking
- Work systems
- Social media
- Your password manager
Think “Digital Smoke Alarm”
You don’t wait for a fire to check your smoke alarm, and you shouldn’t wait for a breach to think about passwords. A quick periodic checkup to update weak or reused passwords and making sure MFA is on can prevent much bigger problems later.
